Early Years Event Support Volunteers will work alone or alongside library staff delivering a range of family events aimed at children aged 0-5 years and their parents/guardians. The role includes sharing information with families about early years services and supporting the smooth running of early years events. Oldham library really values its volunteers. An individual staff member will be allocated as your main contact and you’ll receive all the training that you need to be a confident, successful and effective Early Years volunteer.
The events include but are not limited to: singing, story times, story walks, sensory play, photo booths, baby crafts, and music sessions.
As an Early Years volunteer you’d help prepare and tidy away the children’s library area for the session by putting out chairs and cushions, toys and the books. You’ll meet, greet and settle the adults, children and babies so everyone feels warmly welcomed. For new parents or carers just getting out of the house can be challenging, so it is essential that their experience at the library is as positive and hassle free and that all the staff and volunteers are welcoming and friendly. You’ll need to be able to relate to very young children and their families, but you don’t have to have had those experiences yourself.
You will participate in, or if you feel able, even lead the session. This will involve reading or telling stories, poems and rhymes and singing along to the songs with actions and encouraging everyone else to join in too. Sometimes the grownups can suffer from a little bit of embarrassment doing this so you may need to support and encourage everyone to participate, by being unabashed in your own singing and enjoyment of the session. You’ll need to be happy singing in public and while some musical ability would be an advantage, enthusiasm and being comfortable in taking part is much more important that being pitch perfect. Babies are a very generous audience!
You might also find yourself helping find or recommending new books and stories for the adults and children to borrow from the library to enjoy at home.
