Speak English volunteer Northmoor Library

Main Activities and Tasks:

1. Preparing, organizing and running basic English conversation groups at Northmoor Library.

2. Encouraging students to speak in English and learn new words.

3. Helping steer customers to further educational opportunities such as Lifelong Learning.

4. Encouraging reading and the use of other facilities within their local library

5. Developing student’s English speaking, reading, writing and listening skills

What's involved?

Qualities and Experience sought:

1. Fluent in English (Speaking, Reading & Writing), with an interest in other languages.

2. Enjoy talking with new people and confident in front of a group of people.

3. Available to work once a week for a minimum of 6 weeks.

4. Good communication skills with staff, other volunteers and members of the public.

5. A reliable, confident and responsible individual, with enthusiasm and effective interpersonal skills.

6. Can cope with the responsibilities of the role and the associated environment, including preparing simple lessons.

7. Initiative and the ability to work without supervision.

8. Have a patient and approachable manner.

9. Willing to attend training (where available) and to learn new knowledge and skills.

10. Interested in promoting speaking, reading and writing.

11. Adaptable to the different levels of skill and knowledge of customers.

Time Commitment:

The group meets on Friday mornings.  

Training and Support:
Volunteers will be inducted and trained prior to carrying out this role. They will also have a named supervisor who will provide ongoing support.

Expenses:

Travel expenses (for bus, tram or petrol) will be reimbursed to agreed limits on production of receipts.
