Join Gallery Oldham in an exciting project to enhance public access to its art collection by tagging artworks on the national Art UK website.

As a volunteer, you’ll play a valuable role in helping to make Oldham’s artworks more searchable, visible, and engaging for audiences across the UK and beyond.

By adding accurate tags and descriptive keywords, you’ll help users discover artworks by theme, subject, colour, or style—improving how the collection can be explored and appreciated online.

The role is flexible and remote, allowing you to contribute from home at your own pace. It’s perfect for independent, detail-oriented individuals who enjoy working with visual material, have an interest in art and culture, and want to gain experience in digital heritage work.

 

What's involved?

We need you to:

  • View digital images of artworks from Oldham Gallery on the Art UK website.

  • Add accurate descriptive tags and keywords reflecting each artwork’s content, subject, and style.

  • Improve searchability by identifying themes, colours, objects, or people in the artworks.

  • Flag artworks with unclear or missing details for further review.

  • Record your progress and stay in touch with the Volunteer Coordinator for updates and support.

You’ll Need:

  • Confidence and independence to work remotely with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Basic computer skills and comfort using online platforms.

  • An interest in art, visual culture, or Oldham’s heritage.

  • Willingness to learn and follow Art UK’s tagging guidelines.

  • Reliability and good literacy skills.
