Here at Oldham Library, we are launching a new Quiet Reading Club and are looking for a volunteer to help us run and support the sessions.
The club is designed to be a relaxed and welcoming space for people who enjoy reading in the company of others. Participants can bring their own book or choose one from the library and spend some dedicated time reading, away from the distractions of everyday life.
There is no set reading list and no pressure to read a particular genre or title. While there will be an opportunity for those who wish to discuss their books and share recommendations, attendees are equally welcome to simply enjoy some quiet reading time.
The group aims to create a friendly, informal environment where people can connect with fellow book lovers, discover new reads, and take a moment to slow down and enjoy a good book. Participants are free to stay for as much or as little of the session as they wish.
Sessions are proposed to take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, either weekly on a Wednesday or Thursday, or fortnightly on a Tuesday, depending on volunteer and staff availability.
This is a great opportunity to help create a welcoming community space, support a new library initiative, and bring people together through a shared love of reading.
What's involved?
As a Quiet Reading Club Volunteer, you will help create a welcoming and relaxed environment where people can enjoy reading alongside others.
Your role will involve:
- Helping library staff set up the space before the session and tidy away afterwards.
- Welcoming participants and helping them feel comfortable and included.
- Encouraging a friendly and positive atmosphere.
- Supporting any informal discussions about books and reading, where appropriate.
- Promoting the club and encouraging regular attendance.
- Working independently once established in the role, with support from library staff when needed.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a passion for reading and enjoys sharing that enthusiasm with others.
- Is friendly, approachable, and enjoys meeting new people.
- Has good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Is reliable and able to commit to the agreed session schedule.
- Can help create an inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds.
- Is comfortable taking initiative and supporting a small group.
- Is willing to attend any relevant training and follow library policies and procedures.
