English Conversation Volunteer

Main Activities and Tasks:

1. Help set up and lead a basic English conversation group at Oldham Library.

2. Encourage everybody to speak in English and learn new words.

3. Encourage reading and the use of other facilities within their local library.

4. Help develop student’s English speaking, reading, writing and listening skills through conversation and activities..

What's involved?

Speak English groups at Oldham Library are 90 minute drop in sessions open to anyone with English as an additional language.  As a group leader, you will be leading conversations on everyday topics, encouraging everyone to take part.  Speaking prompts, games and activities are supplied to support groups.

Qualities and Experience sought:

1. Fluent in English (Speaking, Reading & Writing) and enjoy talking with new people.

2. Out-going and confident with a group of people.

3. Available to volunteer for up to two hours once a week for a minimum of 6 weeks.

4. Good communication skills with staff, other volunteers and members of the public.

5. A reliable, confident and responsible individual, with enthusiasm and ability to use your own initiative

6. Calm under pressure and have a patient and approachable manner.

7. Willing to attend training (where available) and to learn new knowledge and skills from other group leaders.

8. Adaptable to the different levels of confidence and knowledge of customers.

Time Commitment:

Oldham Library: 10.00am to 11.30am Wednesday and/ or Friday

Training and Support:
Volunteers will be inducted and trained prior to carrying out this role. They will also have a named supervisor who will provide ongoing support.

Expenses:

Travel expenses (for bus, tram or petrol) will be reimbursed to agreed limits on production of receipts.
