Northmoor Library is seeking a volunteer to lead its weekly English Conversation Sessions on Fridays from 11:00am to 12:00pm, starting in September.

The sessions offer a relaxed and supportive environment where learners from a range of backgrounds can practise speaking English, build confidence, make new connections, and share their experiences.

We are looking for a friendly, patient, and enthusiastic volunteer who can help create a welcoming space for everyone.

What We Need From You:

Qualities and Experience:

1. Fluent in English (speaking, reading and writing), with an interest in languages and supporting language learners.
2. Friendly, approachable, and enjoys meeting and talking with new people.
3. Confident facilitating conversations and leading small groups.
4. Available to volunteer once a week for a minimum of six weeks.
5. Able to communicate effectively with library staff, fellow volunteers, and members of the public.
6. Reliable, responsible, and enthusiastic, with strong interpersonal skills.
7. Comfortable taking initiative and working independently when required.
8. Patient, understanding, and supportive of people from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.
9. Willing to attend training opportunities and develop new skills and knowledge.
10. Passionate about promoting speaking, reading, and writing skills.
11. Adaptable and able to support learners with different levels of confidence, knowledge, and English language ability.
12. Able to manage the responsibilities of the role and work effectively within a busy community environment.

Time Commitment:

The group meets every Friday from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Volunteers will need to arrive before the session to help set up and prepare the space and remain afterwards to help tidy away resources.

What you can expect form us: 

• All lesson materials, activities, and conversation prompts will be provided, so there is no need to plan sessions yourself.
• A full induction and guidance before you begin volunteering.
• Support from a member of library staff during your first few sessions to help you settle into the role and build your confidence.
• Ongoing support, encouragement, and advice throughout your volunteering journey.
• A named supervisor who will be available to provide guidance, regular check-ins, and help whenever needed.
• Relevant training opportunities to help you develop your knowledge and skills.
• Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses (bus, tram, or mileage) within agreed limits, upon submission of receipts.
